The Back Bay Amateur Astronomers is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting astronomy through education and public outreach. Founded in 1978, the BBAA continues to grow and develop cooperative relationships with the communities and educational institutions throughout southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.

Our members sponsor and or participate in many public outreach events such as Astronomy Day, Earth Day, and various community days. They volunteer at the local planetariums and conduct school visits and special educational events. The club holds free public observing sessions on a regular basis. We often team with area libraries and departments of parks and recreation to conduct astronomy events throughout the area and share our enthusiasm and our scopes with various youth and scouting groups.

The BBAA is a community partner of the Rapid Response Robotic Telescope project in cooperation with Norfolk State University and the University of Virginia, and has a long history of association with Tidewater Community College and Old Dominion University.

The BBAA sponsors a scholarship program open to area high school students.
