Night Sky Event!
STELLAR VISTA OBSERVATORY
Fundraiser for Kanab’s Future Space Observatory
Date: Monday, May 13, 2019
Time: 8:00 PM – 10:30 PM
Location: Kane County Water Conservancy Building.
Directions: Travel south from Kanab for 3 miles on US HWY 89A and turn left onto Kaneplex Drive. Go 1 mile and park across the road from the Kane County Water Conservancy District Office building. Enter the large conference room inside.
Description: Deep within the Colorado Plateau, Kane County, Utah, harbors some of the darkest night skies in America. Unshielded light from cities and towns across the world have diminished the treasures of the sky. Learn why the State of Utah supports the preservation of its world-class night skies, and how Kanab has become the site for a future project to create a public educational observatory. Kanab’s nonprofit Stellar Vista Observatory (SVO) welcomes contributions to this extraordinary emerging project!
The Colorado Plateau Dark Sky Cooperative serves a four-state region where exceptional natural darkness is treasured by millions whose home towns and cities no longer afford a view of the wonders of the night sky. Join CPSCD Director Aubrey Larsen for a fascinating multimedia tour of dark sky locations and communities on the Plateau. Learn about the many ways you can help enhance natural darkness and what the City of Kanab has already done to preserve your view of the stars! https://cpdarkskies.org/
The evening will include a brief and informative panel discussion with Q&A on the economic, cultural, public safety and quality of life enhancements resulting from preserving natural darkness. Panelists include Colorado Plateau Dark Sky Cooperative Coordinator Aubrey Larsen, Kane County Tourism Director Camille Johnson, Kaibab Band of Southern Paiute Environmental Director Daniel Bulletts, Kanab Planning Commissioner Donna Huntsman and Stellar Vista Observatory Trustee and former Program Director for the National Air and Space Museum Von Del Chamberlain. Our moderator foe the occasion will be Elizabeth Walker, Founding Director of the nonprofit TranscendDiscipline. www.transcenddiscipline.com/home
Immediately after the program, SVO will host a short moonlight walk along the Sherry Belle Trail where astronomical telescopes will be set up at several points to observe constellations and our Moon!
