Astronomy Seminar, “New Solar Coronal Observations.”
Dr. Matt Penn, Associate Astronomer at the National Solar Observatory, will
visit SIU Carbondale on March 31 where he will present in Lawson 161 at
3:30pm. He will discuss upcoming solar coronal research using the
next-generation, ground-based solar telescope, the Daniel K. Inouye Solar
Telescope (DKIST), which is under construction in Maui, Hawaii. Dr. Penn
also will discuss the Citizen CATE (Continental America Telescopic Eclipse)
Experiment planned for the Aug. 21, 2017, total solar eclipse, and the
prototype telescope currently being tested by Astronomical Association of
Southern Illinois member, Fred Isberner, at the March 20, 2015 solar eclipse
in the Faroe Islands.
